Maritime Museum Lisbon
The Maritime Museum (port. Museu de Marinha) is located in the Portuguese capital Lisbon (Santa Maria de Belem area) and is dedicated to the history of Portuguese navigation and the fleet.
The museum was founded on June 22, 1863 by King Luis I (a lover of oceanography and the only Portuguese monarch who ever independently commanded a ship) and is now housed in the western wing of the late Gothic Manuelist building of the Jeronimos Monastery, an architectural monument of the 16th century under the protection of UNESCO.
